Gallaudet University
Gallaudet University, federally chartered in 1864, is a bilingual, diverse, multicultural institution of higher education that ensures the intellectual and professional advancement of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals through American Sign Language and English.
The world's only university in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Federally chartered by Congress in 1864 with Abraham Lincoln signing the original charter Gallaudet offers 40+ undergraduate programs in arts and sciences, business, education, and social work, all delivered in a bilingual environment of American Sign Language and English. Non-deaf students may also attend. Home to the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and internationally recognized research programs on deaf culture, ASL linguistics, and cochlear implants. Gallaudet's campus in NE DC is a National Historic Landmark.
